Torre dell’Orso is a beautiful Resort on the Adriatic coast, in the province of Lecce, in the beautiful Salento. It is one of the coastal villages of Melendugno, away from the coast, halfway between the capital and Otranto (15 km away from both). Torre dell’Orso included there are six hamlets of Melendugno – Borgagne, Roca Vecchia (site of major archaeological excavations), San Foca (major tourist port on the Adriatic coast between Brindisi and Otranto), Torre Specchia and Torre Sant’Andrea – most of which are located on the coast. Thanks to these the Municipality of Melendugno enjoys a substantial flow of tourists.
Melendugno is situated in the inland, in an area of agricultural vocation characterized by large sweep of olive trees reaching the sea. The historical importance of it is considerable given the presence in the countryside of megalithic buildings dating back to the Neolithic, such as the dolmen Placa and Gurgulante, or specchie, ovens of countryside houses trulli-shaped (known as furnieddhi) and Paretone.
Its Old Town is typical of the Salento region, characterized by frequent courtyard houses and buildings, both civil and religious, to pray, like the Amelj castle (XVI century) the Petraroli castle (XV century) and the Norman Abbey of San Niceta. There are many underground mills (the “Vignette”), a sort of underground caves where no light and air passes through allowing at a less low temperature in winter to have a better the pressing of the olives.
Torre dell’Orso is one of the most popular tourist resorts on the Adriatic coast of Salento which is chosen to spend the puglia holidays. This is thanks to the beauty of its coastline: a long beach of fine silver sand washed by a sea always clear, thanks to the currents of the Straits of Otranto. Several times it was awarded with the European Blue Flag for the transparency and cleanliness of the sea. But the presence of many tourists is also due to the hospitality of this place that takes advantage of the presence of so many puglia facilities such as hotels in Torre dell’Orso Puglia, holiday homes, apartments in Torre dell’Orso and cheaper accommodation such as camp sites and B&B. Of course, there’s no lack in entertainment and in the joyful atmosphere of Salento.
Its name derives from the presence on the coast of a defensive tower of the sixteenth century, used in the past for sighting the Turkish ships bound to the Salento region. This tower overlooks the beach, framed by two cliffs and soft sandy dunes, behind which there is also a shady pine forest. The cliffs are full of caves, a nice example is that of San Cristoforo, inside which were found some ancient graffiti. In the southernmost part of the bay, not far from the beach, you can see also two neighbouring stacks, similar to each other, called “the two sisters”.

Peschici is a town of about 4,000 inhabitants situated in the province of Foggia. It’s part of the Gargano National Park and the Comunità Montana of Gargano, set on the northern tip of the Gargano itself. Thanks to its strategic position it is the ideal starting point for visiting and learning about this ancient promontory.

In recent years Peschici has become a popular and much requested resort, primarily thanks to the quality of its sea which was repeatedly awarded with the Blue Flag, a prestigious recognition of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Today the village is able to offer its visitors a wide variety of respectable accommodation in Peschici Puglia ranging from peschici puglia hotels to residence, from B&B to camps.

The white shining village of Peschici, is perched on the western side of an impressive cliff, rising to over a hundred meters on the Adriatic, dominates one of the most beautiful bays in Italy, forming one of the most typical sights of Puglia Italy. The beauty in the whole has made it famous in the world until even being classified as one of the most photographed landscapes in Europe.

The coast is divided and sometimes high whose creeks space out from towering sheer cliffs, often crossed by sea caves, at times made up of small coves and sandy or pebbly beaches, at times reachable only by sea. All of that surrounded by the lush of a green forest, mostly Pini d’Aleppo, but also by the Mediterranean scrub and olive trees that from the hills go down to the beach.

The old town of Peschici, still almost intact, climbs up the cliff from the marina up to the Swabian castle. The country has a very complicated structure made up of alleys, squares, courtyards, stairways, arches and white houses. The houses overlook the sea and have the typical domed roof.

The urban expansion, which exploded in the twentieth century, took place in two directions and in different ways: intense in the headland, isolated Valle Clavia.

Ostuni (Brindisi), the “white city”, “the queen of the olive trees”, extends over a very fertile and intensely cultivated area between the Adriatic coast and the hills of the southern Murgia region (200-300 m). The town of Ostuni lies on top of a hill and dominates a beautiful plateau of ancient olive trees stretching to the sea. The hilly part of the town is much more peculiar of trulli and masserie, country churches and dry stone walls.

Experiencing an Ostuni holiday means seizing the opportunity to combine a coastal strip of the 5 sails (Blue Guide Legambiente 2009) with the charm of visiting a unique old town. With the several ostuni puglia hotels, ostuni puglia farm houses, villages, camps, cottages and apartments, the city is characterized by having one of the most comprehensive range of accommodation in Puglia aiming at satisfying a large share of visitors.

A must. The old town, perched on a hill (known as The Earth), stands out from afar for its unmistakable white color. Surrounded by defensive walls and Aragon towers it is a real labyrinth to discover, made of winding streets and steep staircases, squares and courtyards. The Via Cattedrale (cattedrale road) cuts the old town into two parts and goes up to the top of the hill where the Cathedral stands. The houses, often dug into the rock, are connected by arches and semi-arches which serve as supports. The most sumptuous palaces are characterized by golden ocher spots on escutcheon or on portals.

The coast of Ostuni today is one of the leading seaside resorts in Puglia. A coastline of 17 km along where there are some beaches framed by dunes and Mediterranean vegetation, sandy bays and a rocky coastline.

Not only 5 sails. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) assigned to Ostuni and to its beaches the 2009 Blue Flag. This is the thirteenth time that Ostuni is given this prestigious award which rewards only those locations that passed strict controls (water, coastal and services quality as well as environmental education on safety measures).

Carovigno is located in the province of Brindisi in the Upper Salento, on a hill at 172 meters above sea level and about 7 km from the Adriatic Sea.

Carovigno has a coastline of 14 kilometers, partly rocky in the north but mostly sandy to the south in the Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto.

Thanks to these two features the coast of Carovigno meets the needs of a wide range of tourist who find themselves in puglia holiday in a Carovigno Puglia hotel or in the surroundings: equipped white fine sandy beaches for those who love the comfort and the utmost relax; some hidden coves for tourists in search of privacy, stretches of rock accessible only by sea for the lovers of the adventures.

Do not miss the area around Torre Guaceto stretching between Carovigno and Brindisi, whose symbol is the Aragonese Tower dating back to 1500 but still well preserved. In the area which became natural reserve in 1991, take place many activities for families and lovers of nature, particularly educational tours to learn about animals and plants, as well as nice sailing courses of different levels.

Corato, municipality of the province of Bari which is 43 km far from it, is located 232 meters above sea level in the inner north-western part of the Murge, in a hilly area that houses the Park of Alta Murgia.

According to some sources Corato already existed in the VII-VIII century AD as a farmhouse village, while according to others its origin dates back to the period of the Second Punic War (201 BC). The name ‘Corato’ comes from the contraction of Oratus Caius, a Roman patrician who had the land under concession. The name Corato was used permanently under the rule of Frederick II.

Finding a corato puglia accommodation, in one of the many corato puglia hotels with swimming pools or in a corato puglia wellness hotel, may be the opportunity to visit the Alta Murgia National Park, which, spreading over an area of little more than 68,000 hectares, covers 13 municipalities, including Corato precisely, the provinces of Bari and Barletta, Andria and Trani.

The Park area is very rugged, steep and barren at first sight, dominated by a steppe environment and characterized by rocky hills and fields of daffodils with solitary shrubs or small trees, which make the park the largest steppe area of the Italian territory.

In reality, the territory is rich in important natural resources, rare plants and numerous wildlife species, especially birds, including kestrels, the park’s symbol, who has found the ideal habitat for nesting. This makes the park unique and relevant at European level.

The park includes a variety of environments, including ravines, deep canyons, sinkholes, scrub and shrub, quarries, woodland and forest patches, Mediterranean lush, farmlands and cliffs.

Water, practically absent, infiltrates into the ground creating come impressive karst formations: the spectacular karst sinkholes of Pulo and Pulicchio di Altamura, exceeding respectively 70 and 100 meters deep, the canyon of Gravina di Puglia, which descends towards Matera and the Bradano marking the border and the south-western area, and the ravine of Laterza.

The discontinuity of the territory, which is its wealth indeed, is due to the atmospheric agents, to the forces of erosion and the work of man who, on a groud deprived of its original forest cover, was an easy game.

The next location that we want to advise for your holiday in Puglia is Ugento, a town in the province of Lecce in Salento region, located on a hill a few miles from the coast of the Ionian Sea.

Among the several hotels in salento puglia, the heel of Italy offers one of the ugento puglia hotels such as ugento puglia seaside hotels, or if you prefer, you can opt for a b&b in ugento puglia, such as a ugento puglia b&b in the old town.

Ugento’s coastline extends for about 8 km overlooking the Ionian Sea and it is mostly low and sandy, spaced out with rocks only for a few stretches.

Its territory is vast and quite varied. Close to the coast there are woods of Mediterranean vegetation that extend up to the inland which is characterized by a typical rural landscape with olive groves, vineyards on the low hills of rocks and clay.

In May 2007 Puglia’s Regional Government has officially established the Coastline Park of Ugento aiming at studying and preserving the several species of local flora and fauna.

Furthermore in June 2008 the Department of Economic Development of Puglia’s Regional Government declared Ugento as the ‘City of the Art’, blessing that the city owes to its glorious and turbulent past.

Ugento is dominated by its castle, built in the thirteenth century and changed in the ’700, and by the beautiful Cattedrale dedicated to the Assunta, built in 1745.

Other important religious monuments are the Monastero delle Benedettine and the Santuario della Madonna della Luce dating back to the ’500, the church of S. Antonio da Padova of the ’400, and yet the church of Santa Maria del Casale located outside the city built in the twelfth century.

You can also admire the ruins of the Acropolis and the Mura Messapiche, the original core of the city.

As per the buildings there are Palazzo Gigli and Palazzo Colosso which houses a collection of archaeological finds.

Ugento offers many ideas for your holiday, whether you want to enjoy its beautiful coastline and the sea, or you opt to dip back in time inside its old town.

Nardò, a vibrant city in Salento of ancient history, is a very important and qualified tourist center in Italy and in Salento in particular.

Nardò has a wide and diverse territory and it has a low and jagged coastline with numerous excellent marinas: Santa Maria al Bagno, Santa Caterina, Porto Selvaggio, Palude del Capitano, part of the Regional Natural Park as well as the Torre dell’Inserraglio and Sant’Isidoro. Nardò and its coastal resorts offer both natural beauty such the inlets and Mediterranean pine forests rich in biodiversity of Porto Selvaggio, or the beautiful beaches with low cristal clear waters and fine white sandy beaches of Sant’Isidoro, and the comfort of modern tourist facilities, particularly in the new resort of Torre Inserraglio, which offers a high level service and gives particular attention to sports and local cuisine.

There are several nardò puglia hotels and in all its coastal resorts, ranging from luxury nardò puglia 5 star hotels to more accessible hotels to suit all pockets and all sort of holidays.

Nardò has achieved for three consecutive years, in 2007, in 2008 and 2009, the five sails from Legambiente thanks to the great respect of the environment, particularly in relation to the establishment of the protected marine area of the Parco di Porto Selvaggio and of Palude del Capitano, and also in relation to the struggle against the illegal building activities, the campaign for sewage treatment and a commitment for responsible tourism.

In addition to the natural beauties of the coast and the sea, the old town of Nardò as well deserves attention for the richness of its architecture: here and there one can see some portals, courtyards, buildings and especially churches.

From the sea to the environment, from the architecture to the history, Nardò will be able to offer a 360° holiday in the beautiful heel of Italy.

On Friday 9th October the Ciclotour ‘Viaggiareinbici’ (‘travellingbybike’) will stop in Monopoli. At Tenuta Chianchizza will be held the 1st bicycle meeting, organized by the Tourist Region of Puglia, Bari and by APT of Bari and the ENIT (tourism commetee) of Stockholm.

This event is part of the Ciclotour that is on from October 5th to 10th, crossing the entire region. Organized by Phil Anders, a Swedish journalist of the magazine Vagabond, the initiative provides an opportunity to experience an eco-friendly week discovering different places and routes, using the bike as the only means of transport.

The event is free of charge and open to everyone, to those who are in the area and are staying at one of the several monopoli puglia hotels ranging from the luxury monopoli puglia 4 stars hotels to more basic but still comfortable monopoli puglia 3 stars hotels, anyway you can’t miss this chance, follow the crowd on two wheels and discover the enchanting and unknown places.

The project is part of the Regional Programs in favor of seasonal adjustment of tourism, promotion of sustainable mobility and cycling. The final goal of the event is the making a great cycling report to be published in Sweden and probably also in Norway, with about 55 thousand copies.

Lecce, capital of the province and major cultural center of the Salento area, has a population of nearly 95,000 inhabitants and is located in the north-central part of Salento, the latest part in the heart of a densely urbanized area. It is the capital of the more eastern province of Italy, and its territory overlooks the Adriatic sea for more than 20 km.

The city of Lecce is famous for the importance of its monuments, many of them made in the typical baroque characterising Lecce’s style. Noteworthy are the friezes, the capitals, the pinnacles and the rosettes decorating many of its palaces and churches, more than 40, such as, the Palazzo dei Celestini, the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Duomo. The beauty of its monuments allowed the city to be called the Florence of the South.

The city center is surrounded by walls dating back to the sixteenth century, but now largely destroyed. The city originally was approachable by four gates: Arco di Trionfo (Porta Napoli), Porta Rudere, Porta San Biagio and Porta San Martino. The latter collapsed in the nineteenth century and is therefore more visible.

The territory of the town of Lecce homes several natural and protected areas of significant environmental importance: the Parco Naturale Regionale Woods and Swamps in Rauccio the Bacino dell’Idume, the Naturalistic Oasis the Bacino Acquatico Costiero and the Riserva Naturale Biogenetica in San Cataldo.

From an economic point of view, Lecce is particularly active in agriculture and craft, particularly in the processing of paper-pulp, food sector as well as in the sector of the production of oil and wine, construction, service and cultural tourism.

There are many visitors in all seasons which literally invade Lecce hoping to admire the several monuments. The city excellently managed to face this tourist flow. The quality of the accommodation offer is high and well organized with several puglia lecce lodgings, particularly b&bs and hotels, at the visitor’s disposal.

Among the Lecce (Italy) bed & breakfast we point out La Corte, b&b in the old town centre wrapped by the warm colours of the typical “Pietra Leccese”.

Among the 5 star hotels in Lecce, we suggest the Patria Palace Hotel, very posh and well-placed in the city centre inside an eighteenth century aristocratic residence, the Palazzo D’Anna-Petrarolo. Among the 4 star hotels we must suggest the Pand’Amuri Hotel, an elegant recently opened hotel in the town of Poggiardo. Last but not least, among the 3 star hotels, the Hotel Rodia stands, located near the center of Maglie, a well-placed town ideal for those who wish to visit the Salento. The hotel Rodia has an excellent restaurant as well where one can experience the tastefully typical cuisine of the region.

Kalé Polis, the ‘beautiful city’… The Greeks called it in this way…

Ancient in origin and oriental-loooking, Gallipoli is located on Salento’s western coast and overlooks the Ionian Sea.

The city is divided in two completely different parts, connected through a stone bridge: the old part, called Centro Storico, located on a chalky island, and the new part, called Borgo, placed on a promontory on ‘dry land’, if we can say so.

Gallipoli was once connected to dry land by an isthmus, called Porta Terra, that was the only way that allowed to enter the city. The isthmus was then destroyed, and in the seventeenth century an arcade bridge was built; it is still today the only connection way between the island and the dry land.

The old part of the city is surrounded by walls and bastions about one kilometer and an half long, used in the past to defend the city from the attacks of enemies coming from the sea. A castle was erected to watch over the old city, but today it cannot be visited by tourists.

The medieval center is very striking, full of narrow and winding alleys, little yards and baronial buildings; the dominant colour is the white of the terraced houses.

The old Gallipoli is surrounded by a parkway called La Riviera, from which it’s possible to look up to a part of Gallipoli’s coast, one of the most charming in Italy, made up of low reefs and beautiful beaches. The seafront Galilei leads to the southern beaches.

Today Gallipoli, destination of an always growing tourists flow, has a lot of good accommodation facilities, such as the gallipoli hotels and the gallipoli b&b, famed in all Salento.

The range of hotel is really very wide: we can point out, among others, the Palazzo del Corso Hotel, luxury five stars placed in a beautiful building of the nineteenth century and located in Corso Roma, the city main road, and the Palazzo Mosco Inn Hotel, enchanting four stars placed in the heart of the traditional historic city center.

Among the B&B we point out The Artists’ House Bed and Breakfast Gallipoli, house/museum located a few steps from the sea, the old town center and the shopping area, where the Apulian artist Giorgio De Cesario lives and works.
